Rebuilding the Shoreline at Socrates
Socrates Sculpture Park has announced an important project that will directly benefit Old Astoria and our waterfront community. The Park is in a FEMA-designated High-Risk Coastal Flood Zone where residents have long faced the challenges of pollution, limited green space, and chronic disinvestment. Now NYC Parks will begin a Seawall Restoration Project that restores the stone riprap along the shoreline to its pre–Superstorm Sandy condition. This work will strengthen Socrates’ natural role as a protective buffer, helping reduce flooding risks for nearby homes and businesses in the area.

Throughout the restoration, Socrates will remain open daily from sunrise to sunset, continuing to offer exhibitions, workshops, and community programs.
During this period, the Park is also expanding its ecological resilience work. New native plantings, including swamp milkweed and other companion species, will be added to low-lying areas to enrich the soil, support pollinators and promote a healthier ecosystem for the community.
