Briefing by Port Authority Regarding Energy Storage Batteries
On September 18, 2025, OANA hosted a virtual meeting with the Port Authority of New York and Calibrant Energy about a new Battery Energy Storage System planned for LaGuardia Airport.
Here are some key takeaways from the meeting:
- The plan is to bring 4 MW of solar and 10 MW of battery storage to LaGuardia.
- Energy will be sourced from solar, not just the grid.
- A key battery site will be near the Riker’s Island Bridge and Elmjack Ballfield.
- The batteries charge when energy use is low (like at night) and release power when demand is high, helping cut down on dirty peaker plants.
- Port Authority and FDNY say these systems are safe and strictly regulated. NYC hasn’t had a single battery storage fire event since 2019.
OANA welcomes the project’s potential to reduce air pollution in our neighborhood.
