Clarifying DSNY Bins and Recycling Requirements
With the new DSNY bins requirements for trash there has been some confusion about whether residents are required to also use an official blue recycling bin. According to the NYC Department of Sanitation, blue recycling bins are not mandated or required. Residents may put their recyclables out in a labeled bin of 55 gallons or less or clear plastic bags.
DSNY confirms that residents will not receive a summons for putting recycling out in clear plastic bags. Cardboard may also be bundled, flattened and tied with twine and placed next to the recycling.
The city does require all residents to recycle, but the requirement to recycle does not mean you are required to purchase or use a specific blue recycling bin.
For complete information, visit the NYC Department of Sanitation recycling guidelines. You can read about the bins requirements here.
