Open Streets Open Restaurants – Spring in Astoria
rkhuzami Since the pandemic started, OANA has partnered with the 30th Avenue Business Association to try to help our small businesses, especially restaurants survive in the trying environment.
One of the tools we have tried to apply is Open Streets Open Restaurants. This is the city program that closes streets with restaurants in order to create an appealing, safe environment to attract customers, especially to the newly built roadway seating the city now allows (And has encouraged.)
Regretfully last year we were unsuccessful in getting approval from the city. We can reapply this year, and we would like to get input from the neighborhood on how they feel about it.
WE NEED YOUR HELP: We have published a release on the pros and cons of this on our site. We would appreciate you checking it out and letting us know if you support this year’s proposal. If the city sees this support, we are much more liable to be successful in securing the best outcome.

Mr. Khuzami has been a member of Community Board 1 in Astoria, NY for the last 20 years. He sits on the Zoning and parks Committees and is on the Executive Board. Previously, he served as Parks and Culture chair of Community Board 1 for eleven years and also chaired Capital and Expense priority Committee. He is a member of the Queens General Assembly and had been a panelist for grant submissions for the Queens Council on the Arts (QCA). Richard also is an officer of The Eastern Mediterranean Business Culture Alliance (EMBCA) and President of OANA.
