New NYC Trash Bin Rules Now in Effect: Get Your Official Bin at Home Depot

As of November 12, 2024, New York City has implemented new trash bin requirements for all residential buildings with one to nine units. This initiative aims to clean up our streets and reduce rat infestations by requiring that all trash be placed in secure bins with a latching lid of 55 gallons or less.

While you can continue to use your existing bins that meet these requirements until June 1, 2026, after this date, all properties must use the official NYC Bin for putting out the trash. There’s a warning period in effect until January 2, 2025. After this date, fines will be issued for not using compliant bins, starting at $50 for a first offense.
