New Compost Distribution Site Coming to Astoria

Due to a huge increase in compostable material collected, the DSNY has opened a new compost distribution site in Astoria — only the third such site in the entire city. As of April 23rd, residents can pick up a free 40-pound bag of compost at 77-28 19th Ave. The location is open Wednesdays from 5 to 7 PM and Saturdays from 8 to 10 AM. This program runs through September 27th, and you must register at nyc.gov/getcompost to claim your bag.

“This is a great opportunity for Astoria residents to give back to the earth and improve our local green spaces,” said Sanitation Commissioner Javier Lojan. “We’re proud to return this material to the community as finished compost — black gold for your garden.”

Certified by the US Composting Council, the compost is great for enriching soil in backyards, tree beds, and community gardens.

DSNY also operates compost sister sites in Greenpoint (Brooklyn) and Fresh Kills (Staten Island), along with various smaller pop-up events across the city.

OANA encourages all Astoria residents to take advantage of this program — it’s good for your garden, and even better for the planet. We can’t wait to see what you’re growing this year!
