Get a Free AC or Fan Through NYC’s Cooling Assistance Program
The NYC Cooling Assistance Benefit opened on April 15, offering free air conditioners or fans to eligible residents in NYC. This is a great opportunity for anyone thinking about getting a new unit this summer, but availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.
What You Can Get
The program will provide up to $800 for a window or portable AC/fan, or up to $1,000 for a wall unit. This includes installation and removal of old equipment if needed. The program covers both the purchase and installation costs.
You May Qualify If
You qualify if your household includes someone who has a documented medical condition that is made worse by heat. This includes children under 6, adults 60 or older, or anyone with a documented heat-sensitive condition.
Your household must also receive SNAP benefits, Temporary Assistance, or SSI, or meet other income guidelines (for example, a single person must earn less than $3,072 monthly, while a family of four must earn less than $5,918 monthly). If you meet any of these requirements, you might qualify for this program!
Note: if you received this program before or have a working AC that is less than 5 years old you may not qualify. Please visit the Access NYC website for more information.
How to Apply
You can apply online through ACCESS HRA, by calling the HRA Infoline at 718-557-1399, or by visiting a local HEAP office. When applying please have access to the following documents and information:
- Proof of identity for all household members
- Proof of residence and rent or mortgage amount
- Copies of utility bills
- Documentation of income for all household members
- Medical documentation that shows cooling is necessary due to a heat-related illness
If approved, an installer will contact you to schedule delivery and installation of your cooling equipment.
