Progress on the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE)
We are excited to share some updates with the Astoria community about progress on the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE).
CHPE Overview
CHPE aims to provide 1,250 MW of clean energy to the New York City area. When finished, the initiative will supply 20% of the city’s electricity needs, significantly cutting down on the air pollution caused by fossil fuels that has affected Astoria.
Updates
- Astoria Rainey Cable (ARC): Construction of the 3.5-mile buried HVAC cable, which will bring CHPE’s power into NYC’s grid, has begun. Operations are scheduled from 7 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Saturday, until December 2025. For your safety and to minimize disruption, trenching areas will be securely covered outside of working hours, and normal traffic flow will be maintained. The CHPE team will be available helping to ensure both vehicular and pedestrian access is managed smoothly and safely.
- Astoria Park Area: Work along Shore Boulevard, stretching from Ditmars Boulevard to Astoria Park South, includes digging and the installation of necessary infrastructure. This phase is expected to conclude by April 2025. Access to the park and adjacent sidewalks will remain open, although some waterfront areas may be restricted. Please keep an eye out for posted detours and other signs.
