Groundbreaking Ceremony for Charybdis Playground Renovation
District Council 22 Member Costa Constantinides, NYC Parks Queens Commissioner Dockett, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver, NYC Parks, representatives and local officials from Queens Community Board 1, the office of NYS Assemblymember Aravella Simotas, the office of the Queens Borough President’s Office, the Astoria Park Alliance, and OANA attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of Charybdis Playground in Astoria Park on December 27th. The renovation will include a spray shower, a water play areas. picnic tables and game tables. The ceremony also included a ribbon-cutting for the renovated track and field in the park, completed 7 months ahead of schedule.
Costa said: ”Very exciting morning as we officially opened the new Astoria Park track & field, which was completed ahead of schedule. Now Phase II of the historic renovation of this crown jewel of western Queens begins: a new Charybdis Playground to serve generations to come.” NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver paid tribute to the contribution of the Astoria Park Alliance, who organized the community visioning that was used to guide the renovation. Astoria Park Alliance volunteer Dori Cocoros told OANA: “We are looking forward to holding programming that uses the renovated playground as a focus.”
