Volunteers will help younger students read classic books, practice writing, and build speaking and comprehension skills through group discussion and mentoring. The program runs over 6 weeks: one week of planning and training, followed by five weeks of sessions at Queens libraries or online. It offers high school students community service hours, leadership experience, and mentorship opportunities. Placement is limited. Families can apply for free participation for children ages 7–14, but acceptance is not guaranteed due to demand. To register click here. To volunteer click here.

The Book Club is currently preparing to begin Anarchy: The East India Company, Corporate Violence and the Pillage of an Empire by William Dalrymple. The waterfront event opens the first three site-specific installations by 2026 Artist Fellows Josué Guarionex, Jeremy John Kaplan, and Nicole Mouriño. These works have been built onsite since March and will remain part of a larger unfolding exhibition that continues through Fall 2027, introducing ten total installations across the park over the summer. The solstice celebration brings together art, performance, and community programming with live DJ sets and experiences by DJ Christian Martir of Sociedad Life, Caridad de La Luz (La Bruja), and Rebecca Gual, along with hands-on artmaking workshops. Visitors can also join a sunset paddle with the Long Island City Community Boathouse. The evening also highlights existing landmark works in the park, including Chakaia Booker’s monumental sculptures Serendipity (1998), Gridlock (2008), and LIKE (2009), which remain on view as part of the park’s evolving outdoor exhibition landscape. Free and open to the public with RSVP, the event continues Socrates Sculpture Park’s tradition of transforming the East River shoreline into an open-air space for experimental art, performance, and community gathering. You can learn more and RSVP for the Summer Solstice celebration here.

Featured Presenters: Adam Gordon — Managing Director, Wildflower Studios Catherine Nasch — United Scenic Artists Local 829 Additional Presenters TBD About the Meeting The film and television industry has long been a core economic driver for Western Queens and an important part of the identity of Astoria and surrounding neighborhoods. World-famous production facilities in the area have included Silvercup Studios, Broadway Stages, and Kaufman Astoria Studios. This meeting will focus on Astoria’s new state-of-the-art Wildflower Studios and the role it may play in supporting modern film and television production. We may also discuss the history of Wildflower and how its experience in logistics and operations helped shape the development of this new production facility. The discussion will also examine the broader state of the film and entertainment industry, including how interstate and international competition, new technologies, and changing production models are reshaping the business. The film and entertainment sector has traditionally been one of America’s leading exports, but the industry is facing uncertain times that affect not only corporations, but also actors, artisans, union members, technical crews, production staff, and many local small businesses. This conversation will highlight the importance of public policy that helps attract productions back to the United States, New York State, and especially New York City....

First, Pride Month takes center stage with a powerful lineup of films and events celebrating LGBTQIA+ lives, queer cinema, and cultural history. From landmark works of independent filmmaking to restorations and special screenings, the series highlights how film has long been a space for visibility, resistance, and storytelling. It’s a wide-ranging program that connects past and present through some of the most influential voices in queer cinema. At the same time, the Museum becomes a World Cup hub, turning screenings into communal watch parties and family events. From live match viewings in the Redstone Theater to football-inspired activities and family days, MoMI is treating the tournament as more than sport—it’s a shared cultural moment built around gathering, play, and collective energy. And that’s only part of what’s happening this month. For full listings, special guests, and upcoming screenings, the best way to stay in the loop is to join the Museum of the Moving Image newsletter, which you can read here.
