Rally and City Council Hearing on Improving Parks Bathrooms and Drinking Fountains (Nov 24th)

On Monday, November 24 at 12pm, New Yorkers will gather in Foley Square to call attention to the condition of public bathrooms and drinking fountains in our parks. Following the rally there will be an oversight heating with the City Council’s Committee on Parks and Recreation (1pm at 250 Broadway, 8th floor).

This hearing will focus on “Improving the Maintenance of Park Bathrooms and Drinking Fountains,” an issue that affects all of us. We all know how hard it is to find public bathrooms sometimes—70% of which are located in NYC Parks.

NYC Parks currently oversees roughly 1,100 public bathrooms and 3,400 outdoor drinking fountains. However, long-standing understaffing and budget constraints have left many of these facilities closed and poorly maintained.

Monday’s hearing offers community members the opportunity to share their experiences and advocate for improvements.

New Yorkers for Parks and the Play Fair Coalition encourage all interested New Yorkers to attend the rally, testify at the hearing, or both. First-time speakers are welcome, and support is available for anyone who needs guidance on preparing their remarks. There is also a petition available for people to sign and share.

OANA urges our neighbors to participate, raise their voices, and help ensure that parks remain accessible, safe, and welcoming for everyone.
