New Micro-Hubs Program Brings Potential Relief to 31st Street Congestion
NYC DOT recently launched the micro-hub pilot program to tackle the growing congestion caused by delivery trucks, especially with the rise of Amazon and online shopping. The initiative aims to reduce truck traffic by creating designated curbside areas where delivery trucks can transfer goods to smaller vehicles, such as cargo bikes, e-bikes, and handcarts.
When implemented the micro-hub program should improve delivery efficiency for all Astoria residents.
Importantly, the benefits of this project compliment our feedback on the 31st Street Bike Lane issue. While micro-hubs will not replace the need for dedicated loading zones, they should help reduce the number of delivery vehicles and incidents along 31st Street. You can read our position on the 31st Street Bike Lanes here.
